Maple Story & MS Guide
Gameplay consists of completing Mable Story quests and fighting monsters to gain experience points, items, and mesos (the in-game currency). Players can choose to travel and hunt monsters solo or join a guild of up to 5 players. They can interact with each other through chatting, trading, or engaging in mini games. The Maple Story mini games are match cards, fishing king, fishing system, gachapon, pachinko, omok, and rock paper scissors.
The world of Maple Story consists of 3 continents: Maple Island, Victoria Island and Ossyria. Maple Island is where all beginning players begin their adventure. The island has short tutorial quests that are designed for learning and once they leave Maple Island they can never return. Victoria Island is the location of 6 towns: Ellinia, Henesys, Kerning City, Lith Harbor, Perion, and Sleepywood. Ossyria has 6 regions and numerous towns: Aqua Road, El Nath Mts., Ludus Lake, Minar Forest, Mu Lung Garden, and Nihal Desert. Players use transportation such as ships, flying trains, taxis, and large flying birds to journey to different locations.
Maple Story characters start out as “Beginners” and players cannot choose a MS class or job until certain requirements are met to complete the first job advancement. Once the first job advancement is reached at level 8 or 10, players may choose a Archer, Magician, Rogue, or Swordman as their new Maple Story class. At level 30 they can choose a second job, at level 70 they can select the third job, and at level 120 they can select the fourth job.
Players can buy game enhancements from virtual stores called “Cash Shops” with real money. The game enhancements include Maple Story items such as clothing and coupons. Maple Story pets which resemble animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and monkeys can also be bought at the Cash Shops.
Like most MMORPGs, gameplay centers on venturing into dungeons and combating monsters in real-time. The players combat monsters and complete quests, in the process acquiring in-game currency, called "Mesos", experience points (EXP), and various items. Players can kill monsters alone, or they can form a party with up to six total characters. Loot is shared based on relative damage and level of characters in the party, more awarded to higher-level members.
MapleStory's 2D scrolling viewpoint more closely resembles a platformer rather than the typical 3D or top-down view of other games (such as Guild Wars or Mu Online). However, the shadowing in the game may cause one to think that it might be 3D.[citation needed] The controls for the game are executed using the computer keyboard and mouse. The keyboard is used for many game functions, and much of it can be rearranged to suit users' needs. The mouse is mainly used to trigger non-player characters (NPCs) and manipulate items.
MapleStory characters exist in "worlds" or "servers." Players are allowed to create multiple characters in each world. Each world, similar in content between each other in the same version, is split into at most twenty channels, among which characters are allowed to freely switch.[3] There is limited functionality in transferring items between characters of the same world; many players use "mules" that hold the player's items and Mesos.[citation needed] The ability to transfer entire characters between worlds was added in December 2007 to GlobalMS. This feature has restrictions such as a maximum transfer of 1 million Mesos and the inability to transfer to the newest world.
